2009 General Aquatic Nuisance Herbicide Treatment Information
The Canadian Lakes water bodies will be treated for general nuisance aquatic vegetation and algae during the weeks of June 15th and June 22nd. As a result of the atypical weather of the spring of 2009, the timing of the treatments is scheduled as follows:
Lake Laura, Sunset Lake, and Fawn Lake will be treated on June 16. Aquatic plants in these lakes are ready for treatment due to warmer water temperatures (shallow lakes warm quicker than deep lakes). The larger lakes will be treated the following week beginning with the Main Lakes Chain (Main, West, Far West, East and Finger) on June 23rd. Lake of the Clouds will likely be treated at this time as well. All treatment dates are weather dependent.
Please refer to the maps below for information on locations that will be included in the treatment. As per the MI DEQ document "Requirements and Restrictions on Chemical Treatments for Aqautic Nuisance Control", the contact herbicdes and algaecides being used during the treatment require restricting swimming and animal watering (supplying pets solely with treated water) for 1 day. Fish consumption is restricted for 3 days. One of the herbicides used, Endothol, carries a "14-day restriction on using treated water for irrigation, agricultural sprays, or domestic purposes." Endothol is only used supplementary in the CL water bodies. The core herbicide used is Diquat dibromide, which carries a "3-day restriction on domestic water use and irrigation of turf and ornamentals" and a "5-day restriction on crop irrigation." Please contact the MI DEQ Inland Lakes Unit at DEQ-LWM-ANC@michigan.gov or 517-241-7734 for further clarification of their definitions.
These are the same aquatic herbicides that have been used in Canadian Lakes for the past 6 years. Only the locations and applications dates have been altered during that time.
