Summer 2014 C.L.P.O.C. Beach Monitoring E. coli Sampling Results
The major CLPOC beaches were screened for E. coli bacteria levels on July 2nd, 2014. As has been the case historically, all beaches tested well below EPA closure levels. There is a strong correlation between beaches that get the most use having the lowest E. coli numbers. The only major source of E. coli bacteria at CLPOC beaches is from birds (geese, ducks, and seagulls primarily). In general, these birds would prefer to frequent unoccupied beaches. I remember working with a large lake south of Grand Rapids last summer that had a State Park beach closed most of the summer due to high E. coli levels. The beach was closed for use until late spring while excavation activities took place. All the ducks, geese, swans, and gulls returned from down south to find the local beaches packed with swimmers. Well, all but one beach. I had to sample it numerous times last summer and each time it looked like a zoo exhibit. This illustrates the value of the "goose roundup" and not feeding ducks, geese, or gulls.
