Phragmites (giant reed) Treatment Maps

The southern Canadian Lakes water bodies of Sunset, Fawn and Lake Laura will be treated in the highlighted areas for the invasive terrestrial plant Phargmites australis (Giant reed). The plant grows over 12' tall along the shoreline, blocking lakefront views. Left unchecked, Phargmites will spread around host lakes as it secretes acid to dissolve the roots of its competitors. As is the case with the Main Lakes Wild Celery treatment, the exact date of treatment is still tba. Treatments will only occur in locations shown on the maps. The systemic herbicide used is applied by hand as to minimize any potential for over spray/treatment of non-target vegetation. Main Lakes Wild Celery Treatment Map 2009

Wild Celery is beginning to send up its seasonal nuisance "curly q" reproductive shoot. The attached map shows planned treatment zones for August of 2009. The date of the treatment is yet to be announced by Aquatic Nuisance Control but will hopefully be in the next few days to a week. Look for the yellow signs if you live near a treatment area. I will send out an email notice when I get a confirmed treatment date. The copper based herbicide used carries no EPA or MIDEQ water use restrictions, but a 24 hour swimming restriction will be posted.
